It’s been an impressive run of success for Shooting Stars who have won the Portsmouth League 13 times since forming in 2007.

They currently have three teams in the Portsmouth League, one in the Gosport League, one at Hampshire level and one in South Regional League division two.

They began in the South Regional League in 2012 after two years in the play-off tournaments.

And as a Hampshire team they were among the first to be part of that new league in 2013.

Regional captain Heulwen Retallick said: ‘In 2012-13 season we were promoted to South Regional League division three, where we were undefeated and gained promotion to division two, where we currently have been playing for the past two years.’

‘The Hampshire team has been close to promotion for two years, only just missing out on the last game of the season.

‘We have a large squad with a great group of players – some of whom have been with the club from the very beginning and some who have played at some very high levels.

‘Jessie Jewell has played for Surrey Storm development squad to name one.

‘Players have come from other teams such as Applemore, Swan and further afield such as Brize Norton.

‘We like to focus on the current teams rather than on old players.

‘Onwards and upwards is our motto. I would like to mention our previous coach, Neil (Arty) Shaw, who coached us to promotion and then consolidation in division two.

‘Due to a move away, he unfortunately had to pass the head coach baton to Jane Jewell who has done – and continues to do – a great job of coaching the teams to get the best out of each and every one of us.’

The club are sponsored by a few local businesses, the main two are Fountain Sports Bar (North end) and KKM Deliveries.

Both have bought a full set of dresses from Viper 10 for the teams.

The club train on a Wednesday with juniors (10-16) training between 4.30pm and 7pm (depending on age group) and senior training 7pm to 9pm at South Downs College, Waterlooville.

Hampshire League captain Anita Farmer said: ‘Last season was a really good opportunity to see new and old players within the club!

‘This season we came third, just missing out on the play-offs.

‘The work and commitment from the girls was great and from this experience it has given some the confidence to trial, not only for our Hampshire team but regional too.

‘From the success of last season and also local league it has opened the door for others outside the club to trial too.

‘Here’s to another successful season for Stars.’

The club are holding player trials on July 1 and July 8 for all teams but specifically the Hampshire and South Regional League squads. They are 7-9pm at South Downs College.

Players will be trialled on skills and game play.

Regional captain Retallick added: ‘I can’t wait to trial for this season.

‘We have a goal to reach play-offs for division one so we need some added quality and skill in the regional team to help us progress to the next level.’

Retallick relishes the positivie attitude and determination of the team.

It makes her job as captain so much more enjoyable.

She added: ‘I’m so excited to be captain of this team, which is always hard working and playing some great netball.’

Head coach and regional player Jewell is urging newcomers to join up with the squad and play their part in what promises to be a bright future for the team.

She said: ‘I am always proud of what the girls put into the club.

‘And having new faces brings fresh challenges for everyone. There are some fantastic players playing in local leagues who don’t think they are good enough to play the higher level.

‘But I would say to them “This Girl Can”.

‘Try the trials and surprise yourself, come along and realise your potential.

‘Everyone who would like the opportunity to play at the next level is welcome to attend, no prejudice to age or experience.

‘Once you come along you will soon catch the bug to receive top-quality training – with a bunch of lovely ladies.

‘Come and see what the club is all about and trial for all the teams.’
