Injuries have hit hard but Fareham Spartans are recovering well and have made an excellent start to the winter season in Gosport & Fareham League division six.
Team captain Sam Parkins has had to lead from the front after changing her role on court.
The switch from defence has proven a success with her shooting skills helping the team to four wins from their opening seven matches in the division this season.
That comes after some difficult seasons when the team’s progress was checked by injury.
Parkins said: ‘We have had a bad couple of seasons due to injuries and one of our shooters changing jobs so she wasn’t able to play anymore.
‘We were promoted to division five two seasons ago when this happened – and we have suffered ever since.
‘Our other shooter was injured and wasn’t able to play last season.
‘But we are hoping to have her back after Christmas.’
‘I have had to take on the goal-shooter position – despite naturally being a defender – and it seems to be going well at the moment.’
The side, who have been together for six seasons, started the season with a loss.
They hit back quickly and have beaten Fusion, Hotshots, Glencoe Spirit and NATS Globetrotters.
They only missed out by one goal to Fareham Hornets and lost narrowly to division leaders Misfits.
The team have benefited from the impact of some new additions to the ranks.
And Parkins is happy to see they are back on an upward curve again.
She said: ‘I am very pleased with how this season has started.
‘We have taken on three new players this season and are doing extremely well in adapting with the team.
‘I could not be happier with my teams’ efforts so far this season.’
Fareham Spartans next play tonight when they are in action against Martinis (8.30pm).
Parkins will be keen for the team to continue their excellent form as they look to build on their strong start to the season.
Spartans don’t have a sponsor at the moment.
They are hoping their good work on the court will be rewarded.
