Shooting Stars have blazed a trail to regional level.

The ladies are celebrating their seventh consecutive Portsmouth League premier division title.

With their second string finishing third, they proved they are well worth the jump to the next tier of the national game.

And Jane Jewell could not be happier with the state of the club.

‘We have lots of new faces joining the club and lots of old faces remaining,’ said the head coach.

‘We have built up a very successful and flourishing club with a promising future of which we can all be very proud.

‘With our successful attempt at regional this year, this coming season promises to be the most exciting yet.

‘We have a new training venue at Portsmouth College and a new sponsor City Wide Taxis, with trips planned to Shropshire and La Manga in Spain.

‘I am very proud of all of the girls and coaches at the club and all their hard work is finally paying off.

‘We are the second local team to reach regional level and what a great achievement that is for our club.

‘Shooting Stars are now firmly on the map.

‘We are proud holders of the England Netball silver caps award and are steps away from being among just a handful in the country to hold the gold caps.’

Jewell added: ‘Our under-16 girls have competed this season for the first time in division two of the adult Portsmouth League.

‘And they finished mid-table, which is such a fantastic achievement for them.

‘They could not have done it without the support of all our club coaches Arty Shaw, Vonda Thorne, Anita Farmer, Clair Buckland, Marony Choppen and assistant Hatti Gould.

‘Without them the club would not run, while we are also thankful to all our players and parents for their commitment to our club.’

In preparation for an exciting new campaign, the club are running four fitness sessions at the Mountbatten Centre. Players aged 14 and over are welcome for the weekly, two-hour sessions which begin Tuesday (6pm).

New players are welcome, too.

Shooting Stars recently hosted their annual junior tournament, which saw 40 teams participating.

And their adult equivalent – set for September 11 – is now open for entry to all teams.

Entry forms for the event are available to download from

Stars’ annual presentation night is September 9 at Havant Leisure Centre.

All players are reminded to get their players’ player votes in as soon as possible.
