Southern Sapphires are shining in another successful season in the Gosport & Fareham League.
The side joined the league last season – after captain Sam Brown decided to form her own team.
They were entered into division five of the league.
And after a season finding their feet, Brown is now confident the team can mount a serious challenge for promotion to division four.
‘After many years playing in other teams, I decided to put my own one together,’ said Brown.
‘It included my sister, work colleagues and former team-mates.
‘And for a team who hadn’t played together before, we did well finishing a stable fifth in division five.
‘We won seven of the 14 games and drew one.’
Those statistics do not tell the whole story, though.
‘As we went into the second half of last season, we started to really click as a team,’ added the skipper.
‘We then started our second season hoping to build on our success at the end of the winter.
‘As a new team we have really begun to settle into our positions and really work together.
‘I believe our strong determination and positive attitude has helped us win all 11 games so far this season.
‘And we are really looking forward to hopefully being promoted to division four.’
To aid their development, Brown & Co are set to join forces with one of the league’s bigger clubs.
‘We were recently approached by Kelly Hayward, who suggested we join her club Youngstars next season and strengthen their current squad,’ explained Brown.
‘They have one team in division one and another hoping to be promoted to division two. So for the new season we will be changing our name to Youngstars Blue. As a team, we are all really excited and looking forward to a new challenge.
‘We will have three umpires next season – this can only be a good thing for both our team and the league. I am really proud of how well we have done this season and hope we can keep our cool and gain promotion.’
Southern Sapphires play Loc Out tonight (8.30pm).
