Shooting Stars do not look like relinquishing their stranglehold on the Portsmouth Netball League.

Led by player-coach Jane Jewell, they once again landed the premier division silverware last term.

Shooting Stars have now worn the crown for each of the past six seasons – racking up 60 matches without tasting a single defeat.

And with four victories already this campaign, the ladies look set for seventh heaven.

The 2010-11 winter season was such a sparkling success for the club, their second team narrowly missed out on the runners-up spot in what would have been a stellar one-two.

As reigning champions the first team earn a shot at entering the regional leagues – a long-term goal of the club.

But first up Shooting Stars face a play-off against Andover Arrows on Sunday, May 15.

Arty Shaw has joined the club in a bid to add some extra nous to the coaching staff and the team are confident they are ready to make the step up.

The new season also sees the Stars junior players battling for adult league honours.

A team assembled of predominantly under-15s are competing in division two.

Meanwhile, the club has set its sights on breaking Jets monopoly on the Gosport & Fareham League division one glory.

Jewell said: ‘Last season was perhaps our closest effort to topple Jets.

‘It ultimately came down to just one game, so this season we just need that extra commitment and consistency from the players.’

The current crop will not be able to rest on their laurels, though.

Shooting Stars boast a record number of 60 juniors aged nine to 16 involved in their Portsmouth Junior League sides.

‘It’s been a long time coming but finally the juniors have the opportunity to play competitive netball on their own doorstep,’ said Jewell.

Next weekend two adult Stars teams will take part in the Pontins tournament at Brean Sands.

And they will be aiming to go one better than last year when they were beaten by Evesham in the final.

‘Not bad out of 120 teams,’ added Jewell.
