Becky blasts double hat-trick as Portsmouth embark on Hampshire League goal spree

Becky Clay struck a double hat-trick as Portsmouth women 2nds ran riot against Blandford & Sturminster.

The outclassed Dorset visitors - who had lost their previous Hampshire Division 2 away game 11-0 at New Forest - were hammered 15-1.

Portsmouth dominated right from the start, and Clay struck twice early on before Hayley Armstrong made it 3-0.

Amanda Owen celebrated her debut with a goal before Emily Crowcroft finished off two set-piece moves to make it 6-0 at the interval.

Blandford struck the opening blow of the second half, past a Portsmouth keeper who had not touched the ball in the first period.

After that, it was one-way traffic again with Clay netting twice in succession before Armstrong completed her treble.

Fiona Bingham made it 11-1 before Clay struck her fifth and Crowcroft became the third Portsmouth player to celebrate a hat-trick.

Clay completed her double hat-trick before Kezia Winter rounded off the rout after a good run from Amanda Owen.

Portsmouth 1sts’ hopes of a top two finish in the Hampshire Premier Division were dented with a 4-1 hammering at fellow high-flyers Basingstoke.

A sixth successive league win would have sliced third-placed Portsmouth’s gap to their second-placed hosts to three points with three games left.

On a pitch that was particularly bouncy, Portsmouth struggled to cope and found themselves 2-0 down - both from short corners - within the opening 10 minutes.

The tricky conditions put a stop to Portsmouth’s normal flowing hockey as the home side pressed them consistently.

After the break Portsmouth upped their game but were hit on the break with another breakaway goal.

Sam Hassall then picked up an injury which necessitated a reshuffle of Portsmouth’s defence and the conceding of another goal.

A consolation came when Jen Smith converted a short corner routine.

Nicky Puckett led Portsmouth 3rds’ 7-1 romp against Southampton 4ths with a hat-trick.

Jessica Attrill, Michaela Chandler and Carol Rutter were also on target.

Michelle Hughes struck a late consolation as Portsmouth 4ths were beaten 2-1 at Eastleigh.

With a multitude of illnesses to cope with, Portsmouth started with just a bare 11 players.

Despite her best efforts, Mandy Wood just couldn't get the ball past the keeper and Eastleigh led at the interval.

The hosts stretched their lead before Hughes’ late reply.

Portsmouth’s player of the match was Dhruti Shah.
