Portsmouth started fast and took an early lead through Pete Hayward from a well-worked short corner.

Edwardians grew into the game strongly and equalised through a penalty flick after a short corner was stopped on the line by a foot.

Continued pressure led to the home team taking the lead with a back post tap in.

Tempers frayed in the second half with several poor challenges by Edwardians players eventually leading to a green card.

Portsmouth equalised from one of these fouls - a quick pass from Adam Payne giving Rob Hunt the chance to run clean through and score.

Home pressure grew on Portsmouth as the half wore on and eventually this told after several short corners in quick succession finally ended with a back post finish from their injector.

Man of the match Paul Barnes scored all Portsmouth 3rds’ goals in a windy Hampshire Division 5 loss to Southampton University at Wide Lane.

Barnes’ four-goal haul could not save his side from a 5-4 loss, with the students scoring twice in the final few minutes.

Portsmouth Vets also conceded two late goals to lose 3-2 to Chichester Deacons.

Chichester preferred route one tactics with their speedy forwards and they opened the scoring.

John Arnell levelled and with 15 minutes remaining Portsmouth's continual pressure resulted in an excellent goal from Tim Schofield.

He pounced onto a through ball from Dave Sims to deflect it past the stranded keeper.

But Chichester broke away to equalise and then, in the dying seconds, they added a winner.
