Great coaching from Phil Budd inspired rising-star Joseph Munns to sprint success

Joseph Munns was delighted with his performance to win the under-15 boys’ 200m on Saturday in the Hampshire Championships.

The City of Portsmouth athlete, trained by Phil Budd, took the victory in a new personal best time of 24.07sec.

It was a big step forward early in the summer and he thanked his coach and training group for all the hard work put in to help him become county champion.

He said: ‘I’m very happy. It was a personal best and the time was quite quick actually. It was a good competition. I feel proud to be Hampshire champion.

‘I’ve done a lot of training for it. We’ve got a really good training group. Phil Budd is my coach and he trains us very well. I wouldn’t have got here if it wasn’t for him, so thanks to Phil.’

The City ace wrapped up a fantastic sprint double when on Sunday when he won the 100m in 12.23sec.

It was a very successful for championships for the sprint talents.

Carter Clothier showed his speed as he ran a time of 11.69sec to win the gold medal in the under-20 100m and Jacob Nelson produced a classy 200m success, winning the under-17 title in 22.63.

In the under-17 100m hurdles City’s multi-event star Elliott Evans picked up the silver medal with a time of 14.55.

At senior level Gavin Bodrell took the silver in the 100m (11.44sec) and Harry Ramsay added bronze (11.60).

Harrison Pocock earned a silver medal in the 200m on Saturday (22.82) and also in the 400m on Sunday (50.98).

Meanwhile, Sam Charig, coached by Alex Budd, won the under-20 men’s 1,500m on Sunday with a time of 3.58.13 and on Saturday took the silver in the 800m with 1.58.45.

Jacob O’Hara, coached by Steve Purser, finished second in the 1,500m with 4.08.95 as he got some good speed work in the legs ahead of targeting longer distances over the summer.

Toby Roe had a strong weekend with a silver medal in the 800m (1.57.47) and a silver in the 1,500m (4.05.72).

After moving up to the under-20 age group Callum Crook stepped up again to the senior 3,000m steeplechase. It was tough with only two athletes competing and he recorded a time of 10.18.91, with Kingston & Polytechnic Harriers’ Daniel Eckersley taking the win in 9.30.21.
