The visitors faced a daunting test against hosts who had won their last 50 games and earned six promotions in the last seven seasons.

Added to that, they are also the current RFU Junior Vase holders.

Portsmouth, though up against it, refused to be overawed.

'We put in a really good performance and one the players can be proud of,' said McRoberts.

'Reeds are a strong side with quality all over the pitch.

'The final scoreline doesn't really reflect our efforts.

'From the start we made it difficult for them, getting up quickly on the defensive when they had the ball.

'Our players took ownership of the space around them in their defending, making it hard for them to break us down.

'It is the first game at home this season that Reeds have not picked up a bonus point win.

'That is down to how hard we worked without the ball.

'It was very encouraging and just what we needed.

'The focus for us now is to recreate the same standards for the rest of the season.

'If we do then we can finish strongly and be ready for next season.'

The visitors trailed 13-0 at half-time after playing down the slope with a considerable wind at their backs.

At the start of the second period Portsmouth continued to put pressure on the home line but couldn't turn it into points.

Reeds eventually extended their lead but Portsmouth finally got some late rewards for their efforts.

From a line-out the ball was moved across the backs to Noah Cannon who broke a couple of tackles to score.

From the restart Cannon again was on hand to gain possession and race in for his second try.

It was Rob Lamberton's final game for Portmsouth before returning to Ireland.

McRoberts admitted he will be a big loss.

'I can't have too much praise for his efforts for us this season,' he said.

'He has been a joy to coach and I would like to thank him for his contribution to the squad.

'He will be sorely missed.'

Fifth-placed Portsmouth entertain third-placed Old Georgians next Saturday.
