In the away game against the same opponents, Portsmouth - assured of a third-placed finish - had to conjure up a late winner.

This time they set the tone of the game by scoring inside the first five minutes. A short corner routine gave Nadz Moore the chance to celebrate her return from injury with a firm strike.

Portsmouth doubled their lead shortly afterwards when Gomez launched herself at a loose ball that came off the keeper’s pads to touch it over the line.

Gomez went on to complete a hat-trick with two second half strikes.

At the other end, two saves from keeper Harriet Read and a goal-line clearance from Moore preserved a clean sheet.

Portsmouth 2nds will win promotion from Division 2 of the Hampshire League if they can pick up maximum points from their last two games.

They moved to within two points of second-placed Southampton University - with a game in hand - after a 3-0 victory at Romsey. At the same time, the Uni students were losing 4-0 to Trojans 4ths.

After Portsmouth keeper Kirsty Harley was called into action early on, the visitors went ahead when Hayley Armstrong deflected in a powerful shot from Sam Hassall at right back.

Romsey forced a flurry of penalty corners at the start of the second period, but Katie Jukes and Joni Duffus both stopped balls on the line.

Portsmouth rallied and good approach work from Beatrice Gall and Laura Ryan was finished off by the unmarked Armstrong.

Fiona Bingham put the game out of Romsey's reach.
