The Summer Showdown between the Wightlink Warriors and Wightlink Wizards brought the curtain down on the Isle of Wight speedway campaign on Wednesday.

The friendly meeting between the two sides was proving an enthralling affair, with the scores locked at 30-30 after 10 races.

However, the clash was curtailed when the Wizards' Whitehouse crashed awkwardly.

Medical attention was required for the fledgling rider, who captained Reading Racers this year, after he suffered leg and abdominal injuries.

And the referee was obliged to abandon the meeting in the absence of medical cover at the track.

Bishop's thoughts are with Whitehouse during his rehabilitation period.

And the Warriors' co-promoter reflected on this season and at the Andrew Younie Smallbrook Stadium and thanked everyone involved.

He said: '˜What a way to have to end the meeting and our season and all our thoughts are with Stephen.

'˜Until that fall, things were going like clockwork with lots of fun, the Wizards gaining competitive track time and a really close main match that was building to an exciting end.

'˜But, obviously, we are not allowed to run without the proper level of medical cover and I would like to apologise for having to cut short the showdown.

'˜On a brighter note, it has been a season of progress both on and off the track.

'˜Martin and I are very pleased with what has been achieved.

'˜We will take a few days to look back on 2018 and formulate some plans for 2019 as we await details of speedway's structure for next year.

'˜I must also mention and say a massive thank you to our sponsors, supporters, riders and volunteers.

'˜They have been amazing and have helped us to take more steps forward.

'˜I hope we have been able to meet and exceed all of their various expectations. Thank you all again.'

Wightlink Warriors were in action against Belle Vue in the National League last night.
