Goodwood’s season finale on Sunday, October 14, will get off to a flying start with an exclusive Vickers Supermarine Spitfire TR-9 display before racing.

Pilot Matt Jones, who manages and captains an array of aircraft for Chichester-based Boultbee Flight Academy, will fly the vintage two-seater postwar aircraft over the Downs providing racegoers with a 15-minute eye watering overhead display of steel, speed and beauty, starting at 1pm.

Goodwood managing director Adam Waterworth said: “This is the first time in recent years Goodwood racecourse has staged a Spitfire display and it will be a real treat for racegoers and our team.

“Our 2012 season has endured highs with the mighty Frankel and other stunning race victories but also challenging circumstances, beyond our control, that have conspired against us - a barrel-rolling air display is quite fitting!”

Gates open at 11.30am for the season finale, which includes seven competitive races including the historic two-mile Alderbrook Handicap for National Hunt jockeys at 2pm.

The remaining six contests will attract flat racing’s finest in the bid to scoop last minute victories ahead of Championship titles.

The meeting will also see the destiny of this year’s Dick Hern Trophy decided - Mark Johnston leads holder Richard Hannon by one in the bid to be Goodwood’s top trainer for 2012.

In a further celebration of our golden summer of sport, London 2012 Olympic games makers, torchbearers and competitors will receive complimentary entry into the Goodwood’s Gordon Enclosure on Sunday, October 14 with proof of ID, torch, medal or uniform.

There’s also an offer of £20.12 for two Gordon Enclosure tickets. Tickets are available in advance via the ticket office on 01243 755055 or online at – quote SF2012.

We’ll have a full preview of the season finale on this website on Saturday.
