Rapid rise of pool talent Jayden BrookesÂ

TEENAGE pool player Jayden Brookes has progressed from complete novice to champion in the space of five months.

The 14-year-old, from Cosham, admitted he had only played a few social games with his dad before joining the new junior league at Waterlooville Sports Bar.

And now he has ended the 20-week season at the top of the table.

Set to collect his first-ever trophy, Brookes said: '˜It's been fun. I'd played a few games with my dad but that's it.'

Eight-year-old Keira Hiscock clinched third place. Jamie Wilson, who competed part time to help the league launch and assist the beginners, was runner-up.

League organiser and World Snooker coach Tim Dunkley said: '˜I'm delighted for Jayden and Keira.

'˜They both play the game with a smile on their faces. It's been great seeing them progress.'

A new 20-week season started on Thursday

As well as playing frames in a league format, the youngsters are helped with their techniques and are taught the rules and the etiquette of the game.
