'˜Composed' Havant seal success at Twickenham

Despite the final scoreline though, Will Knight’s side were made to work hard by their hosts who scored five tries of their own.

In the end, it was the visitors who powered away with 26 unanswered points in the final quarter of the game.

‘All our gym sessions during the week seemed to pay off as we finished a lot stronger,’ said Knight.

‘Everyone was focused from the minute we met at the club, all the way through.

‘Twickenham made us work hard for the win but we produced a really good performance.

‘What really pleased me was the way we maintained our composure and came back at them in the final stages.

‘The only disappointment was the way we kept letting them back into the game by gifting them some scores.’

Havant started well with tries from Luke Barfoot and Scott Morris before the home side hit back with a try of their own.

Joel Knight then managed to slot over a penalty on a day that was difficult for kickers in the wind.

Unfortunately, the visitors then gifted Twickenham two tries to trail 15-13 at the break.

‘One try came from our poor clearance kick and the second when our winger lost his bearings close to our goal line,’ said Knight.

Havant re-established their ascendancy at the start of the second half with two tries in quick succession from Harry Carr and Darren Bamford.

Once again, however, Knight’s team took their foot off the pedal and found themselves trailing again after conceding two tries.

They also had Armundus Morgan sin-binned but that setback only served to stir Havant to greater heights.

Darren Bamford and Joe Davis went in for tries as did replacement scrum-half Grant Morris within minutes of going on.

With Havant in charge, Bamford rounded the afternoon off in fine style with his hat-trick try.

‘It was important we built on our excellent win over Medway before the break,’ said Knight.

‘At times we played some outstanding rugby with excellent combination between forwards and backs.’
