Gosport can't build on maiden league victory

Gosport travelled north buoyed by last week’s first league win, over Dunstable, and with new faces boosting confidence after their transfer embargo was lifted.

Kettering had a strong start to the game and Boro were camped in their own half for the majority of the first period.

Gosport keeper Tom Price had a shaky start to the game, coming off his line to deal with a couple of aerial balls rather unconvincingly, with a new-look back five under pressure. This led to the hosts’ first goal through a fine finish from Aaron O’Connor.

Kettering were dominant throughout the first half and did not allow the away team to play football.

But some smart stops by Price kept Borough in the match.

Gosport started the second period with more of a fighting spirit.

Jamie Thompson got in behind the defence and seemed to be brought down in the box, but the referee wasn’t interested.

Gosport were enjoying more possession and Alfie Lis had a bright second half to set the tone for a braver display from the team.

However, after a string of corners for the home side, it was only a matter of time before they doubled their lead.

Brett Solkham was there to head home their second in the 68th minute and give the hosts some daylight.

There were some late heroics from Price, but Borough’s bid to salvage something petered out.
