Gosport & Fareham are on the up'¦Â Connell '˜does it all' for Locks Heath Pumas
A fantastic first half from Gosport & Fareham took them off the bottom of London two south west with a 27-22 win against Old Cranleighans at Gosport Park.
It was Gosport's first bonus point win of the season and it came about after the home side flew out of the starting blocks from the first whistle.
Tries from Wes Dugan, Callum Fraser and a brace from Shaun Taylor secured the bonus point in the first half.Â
The second half was far less in Gosport's favour and a more even affair
With the wind in their faces they struggled for territory and had to rely on their dogged defence to keep the opposition out.Â
A final try from Sean Shepherd late in the game though sealed the victory for the Blue & Golds.
In the Hampshire Premier Fareham Heathens lost 14-22 against Millbrook at Cams Alders.
Both Heathens tries arrived in the final 10Â minutes.
Player coach Dave Wheaton admitted the Fareham outfit could only really blame themselves.
He said: '˜We are disappointed with the result because we feel it was all our own doing.Â
'˜There was not enough support play and we lacked control in the forwards.'Â
Locks Heath Pumas suffered an agonising 19-18 Hampshire one defeat against the Isle of Wight after a close-fought game.Â
Choosing to play with a strong wind in the first half Pumas played really well controlling the ball resulting in two first-half penalties by Robbie Connell.
The Pumas constantly frustrated the island side with some passionate and controlled defence.
After the break they really stepped up their game. Playing some of their best rugby all season Pumas controlled four phases before putting Connell over in the cornerÂ
This gave Pumas an 11-0 lead but then the home side hit back to lead 19-11 with a few minutes remaining.
Connell added to his tally before the end with an interception try which he converted.
Chairman George Winch felt the team Pumas really deserved credit for their display.
He said: '˜Overall it was clearly disappointing but it was a great performance.
'˜We blooded four second team players all of whom played really well and fitted in to our organisation.
'˜Robbie Connell scored all our points.
'˜He also cooked the after match meal and cleaned the changing rooms!'
