Travel sickness continues of Gosport

not helped by the fact they had to field a below-strength team.

Injuries and late withdrawals on the morning of the game left them facing an uphill struggle.

Chiswick led 17-0 at half-time and quickly stretched their lead to 27 points early in the second period.

Gosport hit back through a Wes Dugan try, which was converted by his brother Wayne Dugan.

The latter then scored an unconverted try of his own before Chiswick notched their fourth of the game.

Rory Penfold then burst through for a consolation, which was converted by Wayne Dugan, in stoppage-time.

‘It was frustrating to travel with a depleted team,’ said head coach Neil McRoberts.

‘We know if we had gone up there with anywhere near our regular side it was a game we could have won.

‘Unless we can sort out a way to start winning away from home, we will continue to find ourselves in the mire.’

Havant were forced to postpone their south-coast derby against Brighton because the Hooks Lane pitch was waterlogged.

Elsewhere, Fareham Heathens maintained their Hampshire one title bid with a commanding 49-0 bonus-point derby win at Petersfield.

Bernie Rhodes’ side crossed for nine tries in a comfortable win.

Heathens remained in third spot but have a game in hand on leading pair Bognor and Millbrook.

‘Every game for us now is a cup final and our destiny remains in our own hands,’ said Rhodes.

‘We were very rusty in the opening 15 minutes because we hadn’t played since before Christmas.

‘Once we started to click through the gears, Petersfield had no answer to us.’

The visitors led 15-0 at the break – with tries by Andy Burns, Inia Qiolevu and Jassan Solanki.

In the second half, Steve Devoy and Matt Smith grabbed doubles.

Burns also notched a second touchdown – with Cam Guthrie adding a try, too.

On a difficult day for kickers, Guthrie notched two conversions.

Basement-club Locks Heath Pumas slipped to a narrow 17-16 home defeat against Sandown & Shanklin.
