Why Harrow win was a '˜big result' for Gosport Borough

A late Ryan Pennery goal secured a 1-0 win at Harrow Borough in Southern League premier division south.

And boss McAllister reckons it was a significant milestone for the players and the club.

'˜This result shows how far we have come in the last four or five weeks,' said McAllister.

'˜It is a big result for us psychologically. The players now know they can win away from home in the league.

'˜We knew how difficult it would be because Harrow are a good side.

'˜At times we had to weather the storm and it was backs-to-the-wall stuff.

'˜You have to expect that, though, playing away from home.

'˜We dealt with everything they threw at us. Our back five were terrific.'

Borough keeper Patrick O'Flaherty was in outstanding form '“ pulling off a number of vital saves.

The young stopped also commanded his area well to take the pressure off his fellow defenders.

In the second half, O'Flaherty denied George Moore twice with good saves '“ his best coming when he tipped away a 25-yard drive.

Meanwhile at the other end, Pennery again proved Borough's match-winner.

And he did so having shrugged off a missed chance in the first period.

'˜He was a bit down after that but I told him to stick with it and the chances will continue to come,' added McAllister.

'˜His work-rate was phenomenal and when his next chance came he took it ever so well.

'˜It was a typical, clinical Pennery finish.'

Six minutes from the end substitute Bradley Stone burst forward and picked out Pennery with a superb ball.

And the striker produced a tremendous finish with an angled shot.

There was still time for O'Flaherty to turn a goal-bound free-kick over the crossbar at the death.

'˜This will boost the lads' confidence,' said McAllister.

'˜They have set their standards and have to make sure they keep to them.

'˜We have been impressing on them the importance of keeping clean sheets.'

Elsewhere, Bognor maintained their unbeaten record in the Bostik League premier division with a 1-1 draw at Carshalton Athletic.

The hosts took the lead after 27 minutes before the Rocks equalised on the stroke of half-time through Jimmy Muitt.
