THE Lawn Tennis Association is trying to get schoolchildren in Portsmouth to try the sport.

National Mini Tennis Month runs throughout May.

Portsmouth Tennis Centre and Portsmouth Tennis Academy are inviting hundreds of schoolchildren for a free introduction to tennis.

Zoe Bambridge, the LTA’s development manager, said: ‘We’ve seen hundreds of new children taking part in tennis activities in the last week alone and are hoping to attract over 1,000 players into the sport this month.

‘This campaign is all about taking tennis to local schools and show how fun, easy and exciting it is to play.’

The national event sees up to 1,000 venues opening their doors for free tennis.

With the season just starting parks, clubs and schools in Portsmouth will be taking part in the Great British Tennis Weekend.

Anyone looking to get back into tennis, or play for the first time can visit to book onto a free session at a park, club or school near them.
