Real Tennis pair Max Jones and William Flynn spoke of their pride after being named the young team of the year runners-up at The News Sports Awards.

The accolade caps off a wonderful year for the 11-years-olds, which saw them win the British Open Junior doubles and the Newsome junior handicap doubles titles.

Jones, who attends Mayville High School, said: ‘We are very proud and it is really good to get the award.’

Hayling College student Flynn added: ‘It’s a fantastic feeling. 2014 was a good year for us.’

The Seacourt tennis club players were among 10 nominees in their category, including Gosport & Fareham under-15s football team and Gosport BMX Club, while Portsmouth School of Gymnastics were crowed winners.

Proud coach and Max’s father, Dan Jones, said: ‘It is just incredible. I am so proud of the boys.

‘It is such a great recognition for them after the year they had, and also for their tennis club.

‘For them to be recognised by The News and by everyone voting in is the best feeling ever.’

In the British Junior Open singles final the team-mates were on opposite sides of the net. Flynn was the higher ranked of the two, however it was Jones who won 8-6.

The Hayling Island club have a great reputation for producing talent – which includes world number four Bryn Sayers – and that trend is clearly continuing.
