Tom Vernon is following in the footsteps of some top talents as he progresses with Havant.

The 12-year-old, from Hilsea, has become the latest dan grade at the club.

After three years of training Vernon has excelled in the basics, kata and kumite – patterns and sparring.

He also had two sparring fights in front of three 7th dan Japanese masters at the K2 Arena in Crawley.

After training for three hours, Vernon successfully got his sho dan.

Coach Steve Fife said: ‘I’m very pleased Tom has passed his black belt, he has trained very hard this year!’

Meanwhile, Havant ace Alfie Cunningham travels to Germany on Thursday to represent Great Britain in the Japan Karate Association European Championships.
