Walker: No choice but to abandon Havant's trip to Burridge

The title-chasing skipper was happy with the wicket but unfortunately the heavy rain had left the outfield unsafe.

It meant both sides, who are flying high in the Southern League premier division, were frustrated.

Walker said: ‘We turned up at Burridge and the wicket was fine itself.

‘It looked like a good pitch produced by Burridge.

‘However, one end of the field was really boggy and wet with the amount of rain we have had.

‘That put us out of action in the end.

‘Safety is the most important thing and it was where the bowlers would be running in.

‘Someone running in on that, bringing mud on to the wicket, will not have the grip they will need to be comfortable when landing.

‘The safety of the players from both teams and the umpires is the most important thing.

‘Both the umpires and Burridge did everything possible to try to get a game on. The elements just beat us.’

Havant remain second in the table with Burridge third.

Both teams have had two successive league matches abandoned now.

It’s been very disappointing for the players who just want to gather some momentum and enjoy their cricket.

Walker added: ‘You are not expecting July games to be washed out by the weather.

‘It’s frustrating for everyone at the moment.

‘Hopefully we will have a bit more luck in the second half of the season.’

Havant will be keen for some sunshine to allow them to host Alton on Saturday, while Burridge make the trip to face Hampshire Academy.
