Some of the cast came along and performed an extract from the show as part of the evening’s entertainment. And they were then invited back on stage to collect the trophy.
Rhian Gardner, who played Truly Scrumptious, says: ‘We were just asked to come in and perform, and that was a big enough honour – it was lovely to come back into our Chitty family for that. But to actually win as well was amazing.’

Rhian adds: ‘It kind of ran away with itself, we ended up performing at the Beaulieu Motor Museum and we were on BBC Breakfast news live - it was like a snowball, there was so much momentum around it.
‘It was great to perform to almost sold-out houses every night, which was pretty special.’
The company’s founder John-Paul McCrohon was also given with the night’s Special Achievement Award.
Hairspray by Titchfield Festival Theatre was runner-up in the musical category.
