CLUB SCENE with Sam Cherry

Halfway through January already and we've seen a variety of free gigs and parties this month, like The Old Barn's open deck night I attended last Friday which did a great job in supplying multiple genre-spanning sets from local talent.

This week continues the free party trend. Tonight, psychedelic indie rock band Mint Gun Club are launching their debut EP at Drift Bar, Palmerston Road. If their track Neurotic is anything to go by, expect high-energy drums with plenty of catchy riffs. The EP is released on cassette (yes, they do still exist!) and they are joined on the bill by Swoons and Veludo Planes from 8pm-10.30pm with the Death Pop after-party running until 3am. More details at facebook.comAlso free tonight is Wolf Cub Club with DJ Pete Scathe at The Edge of the Wedge, Albert Road, with a mix of indie, rock and alternative party tracks both modern and retro. Pete has been awarded Best DJ in the past by ourselves, so you’ll be in for a treat! Free entry from 11.30pm-2am. Check out facebook.com/

Tomorrow will also have another free entry event with promoters Kiss My Bass presenting KISS MY BIRTHDAYS at The Old Barn, Milton. The night is a celebration of multiple Kiss My Bass crew members with DJs Fortza, Aimz, Melton John aka UDY and Neil Doc playing a plethora of bass associated electronic music, from all things techno, house, dubstep, and breaks. Expect a really fun night with doors from 8pm-1.30am. Check out facebook.comLastly, a week today sees the 2016 return of drum and bass promoters Up DnB at Jags 119, Southsea. The crew promises consistent gritty basslines and good vibes with resident UP DJs Negative, Tim Clay, Bennett, Trystal Meth, Goblin and Twinide supplying the heat, as well as side Point four and Vector from newly formed label Context Audio (keep your eye out for these guys!). Doors 9pm-2am and entry will cost £2. Go to facebook.com
