Highlights of today's Portsmouth Festivities
TODAY sees a packed schedule for the Portsmouth Festivities, from poetry to comedy, science, French theatre and more.
Here’s a selection of what’s on:
n Papillon Noir, a theatre group based in Portsmouth’s twin city Caen, present their own brand of comedic street theatre on board the HMS Warrior in the Historic Dockyards, Old Portsmouth. Experience a specifically-produced performance in a unique venue. This event is being put on by the festivities in association with the Kings Theatre.
It takes place from 2pm. Tickets £6, concessions £4.50
n Portsmouth Poetry hosts Poems On A Plate at the Like A Tea Tray in The Sky cafe on Osborne Road, Southsea from 7pm.
Enjoy an evening in this lovely vintage tearoom with performance poet and the city’s poet laureate Sam Cox and All About The Song 2015 winner James Tattington, who performs as Fugitive Orchestra. Sit back and enjoy tea, coffee, and cake while you immerse yourself in a fusion of spoken-word, poetry, and music. Entry is free.
n Eminent physicist and broadcaster, professor Jim Al-Khalili will be giving a talk called Michael Faraday and the Birth of the Electric Machines. He will bring to life Faraday’s 1832 paper on electromagnetic induction and its almost immediate effect in transforming our world.
It takes place in the David Russell Theatre, Portsmouth Grammar School, High Street, Old Portsmouth from 7.30pm.
Tickets £10, concessions £8, under-18s £3.
n And what better way to round off the day with some laughs? The South Coast Comedian of the Year 2016 contest reaches its climax tonight.
Hosted by WOW247’s reigning Best Comedy Award winner James Alderson, the winners of the close-fought heats will now be competing for the title at The Wedgewood Rooms on Albert Road, Southsea.
Now in its third year, previous winners Mike Cox and Joe Foster successfully teamed up to take a joint show up to Edinburgh last year.
Doors open 8pm, comedy starts at 8.45pm.
Tickets £8, no concessions.
