Jamie T leads the acoustic revival

Recent years have seen a bit of a revival for acoustic musicians.

Jamie T (standing for Treays) is one of those who are leading the line, alongside other well-known musicians such as Ed Sheeran, Jamie Lawson and Kelvin Jones.

Performing at the Portsmouth Guildhall on Monday October 3, Jamie T is an artist who is addicted to his work - with very little space between record releases, he uses his downtime to create even more music.

‘As always, it felt like it was taking forever to write and record, but whenever I think that, the record tends to be finished within a month’ he admitted.

‘It’s something to do with the way I write. It’s very unglamorous, and I don’t see the fruit of my labour for a long time. It takes several attempts for me to get a song. I really have to work at it and I take ages to write the end.’

The songwriter, from Wimbledon in south London, has just released his fourth studio album, Trick, with all three previous releases reaching the top four of the UK album chart.

One Treays source of motivation is his battle with anxiety - which previously led to a five year hiatus.

Treays explained: ‘Writing and releasing music is a really good way of stemming the negatives of anxiety. It could also be that me releasing more music means I am worse.

‘The main thing is to keep busy, but in a good way. I’m much happier when I’m productive, so doing 16 interviews in a day, that’s not good.

‘I need to find a balance. I was away for five years, and now, it’s just a year since my last gig. I’ve learned that I enjoy songwriting more if I do it quicker.

‘I have no fear about what I put in my songs. If I start leaving things out because I’m worried about it, then that’s going to have a detrimental effect.’
