Our Country’s Good is a 1988 play written by British playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker, adapted from the Thomas Keneally novel The Playmaker.

The story concerns a group of Royal Marines and convicts in a penal colony in New South Wales, in the 1780s, who put on a production of The Recruiting Officer.

Terri Crawley, director of the show, says: ‘The Governor believed that the performing arts would humanise the convicts and that this early attempt at rehabilitation was better for the colony than hanging them. And so, despite the hunger, the brutality and the struggle for survival, they produced a play to celebrate the King’s birthday on June 4, 1789.’

The show is on from February 10-20. Tickets: £8-£9, visit titchfieldfestivaltheatre.org to book.
