Portsmouth Baroque Choir gets a Handel on Fareham
Portsmouth Baroque Choir ventures to Fareham tomorrow but its repertoire remains firmly in its specialist territory '“ singing music by (or attributed to) Handel of Messiah fame.
The singers, directed by Malcolm Keeler, will be joined by guest performers the Dolce String Quartet, who performed with the choir in October.
Tenor Peter Fellows sings the role of Evangelist in the St John Passion, thought to have been composed by Handel in his youth in Hamburg, although it is also suggested it was by Georg Bohm. But The Ways of Zion Do Mourn is securely Handel’s music, having been composed for Queen Caroline’s funeral in Westminster Abbey in 1737.
