REVIEW: Alfie Boe and Michael Ball '“ Together, at the Guildhall, Portsmouth

Alfie Boe and Michael Ball, both musical legends in their own rights, combined their efforts in a spectacular show.

They met 10 years ago while performing in Kismet at the London Coliseum, and it was the musical theatre numbers that really won the crowd over.

The show promoted the duo’s new album, aptly named Together, and after a whistle-stop tour through films, Elvis, swing and James Bond themes, the pair separated, with Alfie performing Keep Me In Your Heart, followed by a strong performance of Love, Reign o’er Me from Quadrophenia.

Alfie’s incredible vocals had me wondering how Michael could possibly top it, but he pulled it out of the bag by performing Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar with such passion, it brought a standing ovation. Then he performed what is arguably his most-loved song – Love Changes Everything – which again, had the people on their feet.

But when the two of them came back on stage together and belted out a magical rendition of Bring Him Home, mixed with I Dreamed A Dream, the magic really happened. It was enough to bring a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye.

They well and truly deserve their status as musical theatre kings.

The crowd went wild with appreciation and didn’t stop until they came back for an encore of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Their tour ends on Tuesday, December 13 in Manchester. They are playing in Bournemouth on Monday, December 5, Brighton on Tuesday, December 6, and on several dates in London in between.
