REVIEW: Jerry Williams at The Loft, Southsea

The sell-out show in The Loft kicked off with fan-favourite Boy Oh Boy which set the tone for the evening as many sang along with Jerry and her very tight band.

The crowd were eating out of her hand as the set progressed. Older songs like Cold Beer, Bolt From the Blue and A Hairdresser Called Sid’s nestled alongside songs from her latest EP Let’s Just Forget It. All were met with rousing cheers.

My favourite song of the night was Mother, performed with real gusto once during the main set and again as part of the encore. Asking the crowd what they wanted for the encore proved awkward as overwhelmingly they shouted for Stalker. Jerry needed help to recall the lyrics of this old song but gamely battled through with the crowd filling in the lines she had forgotten.

The two covers reveal a little about Jerry’s inspirations: The Cure’s Boys Don’t Cry and the storming If You’ve Got The Money originally by South London’s Jamie T.

As debut hometown headline gigs go this one could not have been better.

Jerry Williams is a confident girl with plenty of stage presence.

See her now while she’s playing these smaller venues. I’m not sure The Loft will be big enough next time she’s back in Portsmouth.
