REVIEW: Write About What You Know at St Philip's Hall, Cosham

This comedy by Paul Gisby is set in the local scout hut of a diverse group of characters meet every week as writing group, so that they can discuss their writing progress. The play was a little slow to warm up, but once all the characters were on stage, things flowed well.

Solid performances from John Morris, as the obnoxious Colin Harbottle, and Chris Wrein, the ‘angry young man’, were complimented by a very funny performance from Julie Williams as Annabel Newstead, the deserted wife. Her mime of Colin reading the latest chapter of his cowboy novel was particularly clever. Amy Gould metamorphosed from shy librarian to sexy author to excellent comic effect, and newcomer Carol Smith hit just the right note as ditsy Barbara. Toni Tovery, Cliff Mullins and Rick Tovery provided their usual excellent comic timing; Toni’s Birth poem will stay with me for a long time.

A very funny play, well performed.
