Theatre and college team up on new course

THE NEW Theatre Royal in Portsmouth has teamed up with Highbury College to launch a new diploma for performing arts students this September.

The new BTEC Level 3 in Performing Arts is the first of its kind in Portsmouth, as drama students will have the chance to learn all about working backstage in a real theatre.

The course will be officially launched at NTR’s Creative Choices Day on Wednesday, when it will play host to Portsmouth schools for its first careers event.

Open to local schools, the day provides students aged 14 to 18 with the opportunity to meet industry professionals, learn about life behind the scenes at a working theatre and take part in a number of interactive workshops including playwriting, stage skills and choreography.

Caroline Sharman, NTR’s chief executive, said: ‘This is an exciting opportunity for us as it chimes perfectly with our ambitions to be a learning theatre and offer support for local people to develop backstage skills.’

At the end of the two-year programme, students will receive a qualification equivalent to three A Levels. For more information visit highbury.ac.uk or e-mail [email protected].
