Christmas family fun returns to Southsea tonight as lights get switched on in style

FESTIVE family fun begins tonight as the Christmas lights in Palmerston Road are switched on.

The Fireworks and Fairy Lights event takes place in the Southsea street from 4pm to 6pm.

It is organised by Portsmouth City Council and hosted by Heart FM.

The radio station team will be joined on-stage by Gosport-born Marcus Patrick, formerly of TV soap Hollyoaks, who will star as the King in this year’s Kings Theatre production of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr David Fuller, and Father Christmas will help switch on the lights at 5pm and kick off the festive season. A fireworks finale follows at 6pm.

The Love Southsea market will be in the precinct throughout the day.

On-stage entertainment includes Mayville school choir, Southzone dance academy, Abstract Dance and Performing Arts, and the Portsmouth Grammar School brass band.

The city centre Christmas lights switch-on ceremony is on Thursday, November 17, from 4pm to 6.30pm.

Cosham’s Christmas light event is on Wednesday, November 23, 4pm until 6pm, in the High Street precinct.
