Great news for ‘trekkies’ – it was announced yesterday that iconic sci-fi creation Star Trek is coming back for a brand new series in 2017 – the first since Enterprise finished in 2005.

Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced both recent movie instalments of the much-loved franchise, will act as executive producer.

According to the show’s announcement: “The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”

Interestingly, the new show will be available exclusively on CBS All Access in the US, which is CBS’s digital subscription VOD and live streaming service.

It will however also be distributed at the same time on “multiple platforms” around the world, though there’s no word yet on where it will be first screened in the UK.

Next year is the 50th anniversary of the show’s original run. Will there be a William Shatner cameo? Only time will tell.

Get hype – and get yourself in the mood – with the original TV theme. It’s in the video in this story.
