A semi-staged performance of one of the greatest British operas will be given as part of the Portsmouth Festivities on Thursday, June 25 (7.30pm).

Dido And Aeneas, Henry Purcell’s only complete opera, will be sung in the Anglican Cathedral by Portsmouth Festival Choir and soloists including Alexandra Stevenson, daughter of the late Bishop of Portsmouth.

Mezzo-soprano Zarah Hible will perform the famously heart-rending Dido’s Lament, and Rupert Reid (baritone) sings Aeneas.

Period instruments will be played by the Portsmouth Baroque Ensemble, and Timestep Academy of Dance also takes part in the performance in the Anglican Cathedral.

Dido And Aeneas will be preceded by songs and instrumental music by Purcell.

Tickets cost £15 (concessions available, under-16s free) from portsmouthfestivities.co.uk.
