A hairdresser’s might not be the usual place to launch a new EP, but it’s apt for singer-songwriter Jerry Williams.

The 18-year-old winner of The News’ Instant Star competition is releasing her acoustic EP, A Hairdresser Called Sid’s, and is marking it by playing a free gig at the eponymous shop tonight from 7pm.

The title track tells a story about a night out that Jerry had which ended with her being dropped off outside Sid’s on Locksway Road in Milton.

In coming weeks, Jerry will also feature in The Portsmouth Independent Sessions, a series of music videos shot at locations around the city that are important to her.

Filmed and edited by University of Portsmouth film and TV students, the first will be released online tomorrow, with a new one released every two week.

Among the locations are The Garage Lounge in Albert Road, All About Tea in Eldon Street, The Hot Walls in Old Portsmouth, Parmiters Antiques in Albert Road, Sweet Memories Record store in Fratton.
