An award-winning young soloist will team up with an award-winning conductor and orchestra in a concert in Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral next Saturday (March 1).

For Jenny Whitby, 17, the performance is her prize for scooping the Solent Symphony Orchestra Concerto Award at last year’s Portsmouth Music Festival, and for the SSO and conductor Steve Tanner the concert is their first since winning the classical music trophy at the Guide Awards in January.

Jenny, from the New Forest, has plenty of experience of high-profile performances as principal flute in the Hampshire County Youth and Chamber Orchestras and principal piccolo in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

Now she will play French composer Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto, which features a poignant and mysterious slow movement and jazzy finale.

The programme also includes Dvorak’s Symphony No 7, widely considered his finest, and Mendelssohn’s Ruy Blas Overture.

Tickets cost £12 (concessions available) from (01252) 711658 or (023) 9286 2957.
