A young, internationally-acclaimed Ukrainian violinist teams up with a popular veteran conductor next week in the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s first Portsmouth Guildhall concert of 2016.
Valeriy Sokolov will play Shostakovich’s first violin concerto with Dutchman Kees Bakels on the rostrum on Thursday (7.30pm).
This follows acclaimed BSO performances of the same composer’s 11th symphony and first cello concerto earlier in the season.
The programme begins with Kikimora, a vivid evocation by Liadov of a character from Russian folklore, and ends with Beethoven’s ground-breaking fifth symphony.
Tickets cost £29.50 to £14.75 (concessions available) from 0844 453 9028, bsolive.com or in person at the box office.
