Slade and Sweet

Kings Theatre, Southsea

Perhaps a little early for the Christmas spirit to be flowing freely but Slade were back in town accompanied by glam rock cohorts Sweet.

Featuring guitarist Andy Scott from the original line up, Sweet opened with an excellent set that included most of their biggest hits and reminded us what good songs they were.

The current Slade line up has also lost a few originals, with Don Powell on drums being joined by lead guitarist Dave Hill, who reveled in the limelight atop his monitor with trademark hat replacing that famous fringe.

Lead singer Mal McNulty did a great job and must have felt at home having previously spent nine years with Sweet.

It’s a shame that anyone under thirty probably considers Slade a one hit wonder because they have a very strong back catalogue with six number ones and a dozen consecutive top ten hits. On Saturday they had the audience on their feet. All the big hits were featured and as an encore... Merry Christmas!
