Gaz Coombes, best known for being lead singer and guitarist in the alternative rock outfilt Supergrass, will play the Southampton Engine Rooms tonight.

Gaz is riding high on the success of his second solo album Matador, which features the striking track The Girl Who Fell To Earth.

The track is an ode to the musician’s daughter.

Supergrass spit in 2010 after 17 years together, citing musical differences. Their seventh album Release the Drones remains unfinished and unreleased.

‘It was always important for me to evolve and move forward, keep things fresh,’ he says. ‘When you’re in a band, everyone has to be happy, the session has to be flowing. Everyone has to be enthusiastic and excited.

‘So, I guess when there are those ideas that need a little working through, the band can get bored.

‘It’s good being on your own to just explore those things.’

Tickets: £15. The gig starts at 7.30pm.
