Have your say

As we approach the second anniversary of Portsmouth Cultural Trust taking over Portsmouth Guildhall, the venue has a wide-ranging bill of gigs lined up for 2013. Paloma Faith, Jake Bugg and The Specials have already sold out. So you may want to think about booking now if any of the below shows take your fancy.

Boogie nights

Those who fondly remember the music of the 1970s and those who wish they’d been alive to hear it first time around will love Boogie Nights. Following the pop musical of the same name starring Shane Richie, this concert features songs from the ‘70s musical sung by a host of stars including The Osmonds, Gareth Gates, Louisa Lytton, Andy Abraham, Chico and Shane Richie Junior. It comes to the Guildhall on February 20.

Mick Hucknall

In his first UK solo tour, Mick Hucknall brings ‘American Soul’ to the Guildhall on April 16. The beginning of a new chapter for the ex-Simply Red frontman, it sees him showcase material from his American Soul album which features his own take on songs which have inspired him. Expect classics songs such as I Only Have Eyes For You, I’d Rather Go Blind and That’s How Strong My Love Is.

Simple Minds

After performing here in 2009, Simple Minds return to the Guildhall on April 30 on their Greatest Hits tour. The Glasgow band have achieved six No.1 albums in the UK as well hitting the top spot in Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. They’ll be performing hits including Alive and Kicking and Don’t You (Forget About Me) in a show of two halves with an interval and no support.

Michael Ball

The musical theatre star, who has a house at Itchenor, comes to the Guildhall on May 10 with his Both Sides Now our. It’s named after his new album, due for release next month. Both the tour and album will comprise two halves, with Michael’s biggest hits from both his recorded and stage careers.

They may be whippersnappers compared to The Osmonds, Mick Hucknall, Simple Minds and Michael Ball, but McFly have had seven UK No.1 singles and five Top 10 albums. And they also have a Greatest Hits tour coming up. The four-piece shot back into the limelight in 2011 when members won I’m A Celebrity... and Strictly Come Dancing. Now, in their 10th anniversary year, they return to the Guildhall on May 14 with Memory Lane: The Best of Tour.
