Portsmouth’s two biggest classical choirs will have heavyweight instrumental support in their Christmas concerts this weekend.
Tomorrow (7.30pm), Portsmouth Choral Union will be joined by Hampshire County Youth Orchestra in a programme of carols and other seasonable music at St Mary’s Church, Fratton Road.
The repertoire features choruses from Handel’s Messiah in the rarely-heard orchestration by Sir Eugene Goossens.
Tickets cost £14 (£12 in advance) from (023) 9282 2227 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Then on Sunday (4pm), Portsmouth Festival Choir will perform by candlelight at St Agatha’s Church in Market Way with a choir from Corpus Christi Primary School. The Maritime Brass Ensemble will add weight to the choral sound as well as playing rousing seasonable items of its own.
Bob Chilcott’s entertaining version of The 12 Days of Christmas, featuring various musical styles, is among the choral works, and there will be traditional and contemporary carols. Tickets cost £8 (under-16s free, no other concessions) from Di Wren on (023) 9273 7470.
