IMAGINE a less kooky Feist, or a less temperamental Cat Power, but with the songs to match either and you’re on your way to Joan as Policewoman, aka Joan Wasser.
Performing as a three-piece with a drummer and additional keyboards, Wasser switches between her own keyboard and guitar.
Drawing heavily from her new, third, album The Deep Field, its funkier sound has had an effect on her earlier more downbeat material when performed live.
Highlights include new single The Magic, with its organ-driven groove and set closer, I Was Everyone.
On this last night of her UK tour Wasser is by turns chatty and intensely focused on her music, several numbers spiralling into wigged-out jams.
And for the encores, she gives us a pair of ballads ‘as it’s Valentines’, and you could hear a pin drop during Real Life. This is one police officer worth stopping for.
