One of Britain’s most popular musicians will play one of the world’s most popular violin concertos as the centrepiece of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s Portsmouth Guildhall concert on Thursday (7.30pm).

Mendelssohn’s masterpiece will be framed by Russian works – Prokofiev’s entertaining Lieutenant Kije Suite, derived from his score for a film about a fictitious soldier, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 1, subtitled Winter Daydreams.

The conductor is 30-year-old Italian Daniele Rustioni, who was named Best Newcomer in the 2013 International Opera Awards and has appeared with Italy’s major opera companies and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Tickets cost £29.50 to £14.75 in person from the Guildhall box office, or from 0844 453 9028.
