Fresh from releasing a new album, virtuoso guitarist and composer Steve Vai is on a UK tour _ and arrives at Portsmouth Guildhall tonight.

The American Grammy Award winner is playing a few dates, including Portsmouth, following the release of his The Story of Light album.

The Story of Light is a largely instrumental album that continues a concept begun on Vai’s acclaimed 2005 recording Real Illusions: Reflections.

But there are some guest vocalists, including singer songwriter Aimee Mann – dueting with Vai on No More Amsterdam, which she co-wrote – and Beverly McClellan, a season one finalist on The Voice (USA).

Following the 2009 live album Where The Wild Things Are, The Story of Light is Vai’s 16th solo effort.

Vai recorded and toured in Frank Zappa’s band for two years in the early ‘80s. He began a solo career in 1983 and has since won three Grammy Awards. He has also recorded and toured with Public Image Ltd, Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth and Whitesnake.

Vai has sold nearly six million albums throughout his career and his music has had a huge influence on contemporary hard rock.

His Grammy wins were for 1994’s Best Rock Instrumental Performance for his performance on Frank Zappa song Sofa from the tribute album Zappa’s Universe; Best Pop Instrumental Album for Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather’s No Substitutions (Vai produced and engineered the album and his record label Favored Nations released the CD in 2001); and 2008’s Best Rock Instrumental Performance for a cover of Frank Zappa’s Peaches En Regalia.

He’ll be at Portsmouth Guildhall tonight along with Beverly McClellan who is touring with him.
