A Finnish soloist has been recruited to join the Solent Symphony Orchestra in Portsmouth tomorrow (7.30pm), in a celebration of the imminent 150th anniversary of the birth of composer Jean Sibelius.
Frida Backman will play her compatriot’s virtuoso violin concerto, and the programme also includes his tone poem En Saga, which evokes the epic world of Nordic legends.
Frida, a graduate with first-class honours from specialist music colleges in both Finland and London, now lives in the New Forest. She first appeared as a concerto soloist at the age of nine.
The concert at Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral also features Symphony No 6 by late-romantic Russian composer Glazunov, widely regarded as his masterpiece.
Tickets cost £12 (concessions available) from (01252) 711658 or (01252) 793830, or at the door.
