Chichester Festival Theatre's hit production of Yes, Prime Minister – now playing in the West End – is to tour to the Southampton Mayflower.

The play by Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay, based on their TV series, will feature Simon Williams as cabinet secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and Richard McCabe as prime minister Jim Hacker.

Williams is best-known for playing James Bellamy in the original version of period drama Upstairs, Downstairs, Dr Charles Cartwright in sitcom Don't Wait Up and Sir Charles Merrick in Holby City.

Richard McCabe was at Chichester in summer 2010 in Bingo and the double bill of The Real Inspector Hound and The Critic.

In the new play, Hacker and Sir Humphrey face a country in financial meltdown, with the only prospect of salvation coming from morally dubious allies.

Yes, Prime Minister will be at Southampton from March 15-19.

Booking opens on January 24 for a summer highlight at the Mayflower – the return of Monty Python's Spamalot from June 6-11.

Phill Jupitus takes on the role of King Arthur, having previously played Edna Turnblad in the West End production of Hairspray, with Todd Carty again playing Patsy.
