REVIEW: The Bowie Experience,Kings Theatre, Southsea

When David Bowie sadly passed away in 2016, his fans all over the world were understandably devastated. He lost his 18-month battle to cancer, the illness he had kept secret from his adoring public. However, with such an impressive back catalogue, his legacy lives on through shows such as the Bowie Experience.

Laurence Knight stars as Bowie in this tribute to the music icon. Kicking off with Space Oddity, the show rattles through his songs, highlighting just how much success he had. The first half featured some of his most recognisable hits including Life on Mars, Jean Genie, Rebel Rebel, Suffragette City and Changes. The latter was particularly impressive as artwork of the ever-changing faces of David Bowie were projected on the large screen behind the stage.

The band and backing vocalists were brilliant all evening and credit to the wardrobe department as the leading man’s costumes were fantastic.

With the exception of Under Pressure featuring the hugely impressive Charlotte on guest vocals, act two was not as entertaining as the first. This was evident from the more subdued audience reaction and notably less people dancing.

The evening was marred by crowd members chatting throughout the performance in one of the worst examples of theatre etiquette I’ve ever seen.

These points aside, it was a satisfying evening for Bowie fans.
