Stunning one-woman show Lost in Blue opens in Hampshire

Lost in Blue is the latest spoken word show by Shakespeare’s Globe storyteller Debs Newbold.

Moving and funny, it follows the story of 17-year-old Annie who struggles to come to terms with the accident that put her father Paul in a coma 15 years earlier.

She and her mother have just moved to Birmingham, after living in Australia for 15 years, to try and rebuild their lives back in the UK – lives that for many years have been paused, frozen in time on the day of Paul’s tragic accident.

Describing the work, Newbold said: ‘This show started off as a niggling thought about the voice.

‘I’d just lost my nan, who had an extraordinary voice, a cheeky Brum-Irish lilt totally unique to her.

‘I knew I had a recording of her voice on a minidisc, but it was ages before I could bring myself to listen to it.

‘Hearing the recorded voice of a loved one who has died is as near to an encounter with a ghost as I can imagine.

‘It’s as if they inhabit the air in the room with you for a moment, and I began to get ideas about a person who manages to be both absent and present at the same time.

‘That’s where the image of a man in a coma came from.’

The show opens at the West End Centre, Aldershot on Thursday.

Tickets are £12 or £10 for concessions.
