The Nutcracker

Mayflower Theatre, Southampton

A magical Christmas treat was brought to the stage at The Mayflower by the English National Ballet with their graceful performance of The Nutcracker.

As a first timer to the world of ballet, I was left speechless.

In a world of Edwardian elegance, The Nutcracker brings to life the eternally popular Tchaikovsky, featuring the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Waltz of the Flowers.

Peter Farmer’s design of the set and costumes was magnificent and included realistic snow, which enhanced the story and allowed the cast to ‘ice-skate.’

Until you’ve been to ballet, you don’t quite realise just how drawn in and emotionally involved you can get with the characters and story.
